The meatballs my mother made

IN 6 TH  AND 7 TH  GRADE IN MONTREAL , CANADA, I LEARNED SOME PRINCIPLES OF COOKING IN THE HOME ECONOMICS CLASSES THEY OFFERED  AT THE TIME. I THINK THAT IT WAS BECAUSE OF THIS JUMP START INTO COOKING THAT MAMI DECIDED I SHOULD BE IN CHARGE OF PREPARING SOME EASY DISHES FOR OUR FAMILY. TWO OF THESE WERE ITALIAN MEATBALLS AND MEATLOAF. YEARS LATER I WOULD SUBSTITUTE GROUND TURKEY FOR THE BEEF, BUT THE OTHER INGREDIENTS WERE NOT ALTERED. WE MOVED TO MONTREAL IN CANADA IN 1966, WHEN I WAS 12 YEARS OLD. DURING MY 13 TH  YEAR, MAMI TAUGHT ME SEVERAL RECIPES TO COOK, AND SHE ESPECIALLY GAVE ME THE CHARGE OF MAKING MEATBALLS OR MEATLOAF. THE FOLLOWING IS HER RECIPE, WHICH I LATER MODIFIED BY SUBSTITUTING GROUND TURKEY FOR THE BEEF) POLPETTE E POLPETTONE/MEATBALLS, HAMBURGER PATTIES AND MEATLOAF     1 lb. ground meat of choice (ground turkey for our family) 1 slice of day old bread (I always use whole wheat of multi grain)placed in a small bowl of milk. Squeeze the bread v

The joy of baking....with music!

When I have the time, I love to cook and bake. It is a way I can express my creativity and at the same time show people that I care about them.  With cooking as with art, music, and crafts, I am always amazed at the myriad combinations people have come up with to express themselves...and seldom are these repeated. Even when copied, the author will leave his/her unique mark on his/her work. Getting back to my baking, last Thursday we were home from school in observance of Rosh Hashanah (we have a fairly large Jewish population at Durham Academy). The next day some of the women faculty were going to have a baby shower for one of our colleague held at another teacher's house, so I baked cupcakes and sugar cookies.  It is one of my greatest pleasures to putter in the kitchen while listening to music. I load our CD player, which holds 5 CDs, with my favorite music, I raise the volume pretty high and I am truly content. This time, I didn't even check which cds where in, I just

Steve's 60th Birthday

Image
September 2, 1953 was the day my sweet Steve was born. How thankful I am that he is in the world and especially in my life! We have known each other for 32 years and I have grown in many ways because of his faithfulness to God, to me and the boys and to his birth family. I am so thankful he is my very best friend, and as our sons, Jonathan and Luca have grown up and left the nest, it is so gratifying to share times together, whether discussing our teaching methods, sharing books, watching "Master Piece Theater", preparing to host special friends/family, or going on walks in our neighborhood. We both look forward to being with each other, and sometimes I am very surprised that Steve is never tired of me!?!  The weekend of Sept. 2, his 60eth birthday, he was celebrated by his family, starting on Saturday. Mom Rosalind invited us for a curry lunch; we were joined by the McKinleys and Marsha. It is always special to go to the cabin and spend the night...we got to play Sc

Beach Week

Image
Long Beach, Oak Island-July 2013 We have come to Long Beach for so many years, never growing tired of the changing sea, and the scenery.  The sand dunes, sea oats, sea gulls and pellicans flying over head. I am mesmerized by the power and beauty of the ocean, the constancy of low and high tides, and the change of the sandy beaches… Lovely place to visit for vacation. For several years, we have been renting a lovely home from a good friend and colleague.  We love it, and it feels like coming home each time we cross the door. The house is decorated so tastefully and simply, without too many "fru-frus". F or a week we blissfully relax, read, walk on the beach and swim, play games, have quality family times and LOTS of great food. I am so grateful, Father, for these times of renewal, close to the beauty of your creation! We came with Sam, Mel and their boys as well as Luca. I am always thankful when we have these opportunities to be all together. I im
